Panning for Gold

I like to watch the reality shows about digging for gold in Alaska. I find it amazing how gold diggers will invest millions of dollars in equipment, risk family fortunes and their own lives in hopes of discovering the mother lode. They will sift through tons of mud, finding only a few ounces of gold, but continue onward in hopes of finding more. Through rain and snow they continue their quest, determined to the very end. “Panning for gold” is a phrase people are familiar with, even though most of us will never do it; but we may be [...]

The Importance of Unity

In Psalm 133, the psalmist writes, “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” On the night before He was crucified, our Lord prayed that we be one (John 17). One of the purposes of writing Why Your History Matters was to allow Christians to have a basic understanding of the common heritage we share with fellow believers. All Christians should be able to trace their spiritual heritage back to Christ. Our common heritage should unite us, realizing that the enemy, Satan, is persistent and will do anything to disrupt the unity of the [...]

Israel’s History Is Under Attack—the Outcome Matters

During October of 2016, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), approved a resolution which effectively questions any Jewish connection to the Western Wall and the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The very sad thing is that Christians don’t seem to appreciate how dangerous and absurd such a resolution is. Charles Krauthammer observed (10/27/16) that UNESCO’s resolution was simply “an Orwellian absurdity” that “makes a mockery of the Gospels, which chronicle the story of a Galilean Jew whose life and ministry unfolded throughout the Holy Land, most especially in Jerusalem and the Temple.” World history records that Islam [...]

Our Legacy to Our Children

Dietrich Bonhoeffer said “the ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children.” Bonhoeffer was a German Lutheran pastor who vocally opposed Hitler, was arrested, and eventually hanged. His martyrdom in opposition to Hitler’s Nazi Germany inspired other leaders to come forward, such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and anti-communist movements in Eastern Europe. Few Christians living in the United States will experience severe persecution; but Christians living in certain Middle Eastern countries and other parts of the world face life threatening persecution almost daily, even children are being killed. What [...]

Living in an Age of Misinformation

For two years I was compelled to write my book, Why Your History Matters. Being a first time author, I realize any marketing of the book was on my shoulders. But, since I have a full-time job as a sole practitioner CPA, it is often difficult to find time to reach out to organizations, which may be open to receiving the message that our Christian heritage is at risk of being lost to the next generation. There was concern that I would be motivated to share my book with others after its publication in March of 2016. But then [...]

Perspective Is Everything

When studying any topic, I believe perspective is everything. What are you trying to get out of the study? For example, as a certified public accountant, my perspective relating to preparing financial statements includes compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Banks usually request financial statements prepared by CPAs because they trust the perspective of a CPA, as opposed to an owner or investor, who may fail to report significant information. When studying the history of Germany, do you think it would matter if your background was Jewish? When writing about the history of the Protestant faith, would it [...]

A Shared Heritage and a Shared Destiny

On October 4, 1997, over one million men traveled to our nation’s capitol to honor our Lord, pray for our nation, and our families. The stated purpose of this gathering was “to gather a diverse multitude of men in the name of Jesus Christ, to confess personal and collective sin so that we may present to the Lord godly men on their knees in humility, then on their feet in unity, reconciled and poised for revival and spiritual awakening.” I was there; the experience was supernatural, and I was a skeptic. Park rangers at the event told me that [...]

The Priceless Gift

Have you ever heard stories of people who would never share or spend money, live as if they had no money, then die friendless, leaving behind a mattress full of cash? Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge who was in danger of living such a life. He never realized he was carrying around an invisible chain he created himself, because of his unwillingness to show any concern for his fellow man. Could current-day Christians be weaving their own chain by ignoring their ancestors? Our Christian heritage represents a priceless gift made up of memories, [...]
